Joustra Reid
House

The villa stands on a wide site, willow-lined avenue in a 1930s residential area. By combining traditional building methods and new techniques, the architect achieved a contemporary interpretation of the local palette of building materials that is contextual without being slavishly imitative. This applies, for example, to the chosen roof, most of the houses here have, like the new villa, an expressive roof, of thatch, slate or tiles. The choice of materials that will acquire an attractive patina over time is similarly in tune with the surrounding development. The house consists of two main volumes, roof and base. Inflected, laminated trusses rise up from the basement. The trusses, which taper towards the ridge, carry the curved, thatch-covered roof. The roof is virtually imperforate, with large skylights compensating for the lack of daylight. From a distance the roof appears float above the plot, an effect derived from the fact that the ground and main floor elevations are for the most part glued sheet glass. The various spaces in the house are directly connected to one another so that exposed trusses are visible over several levels.
The undulating lower edge of the thatch results in some areas that are more private and enclosed while others are granted an unimpeded view of the garden. To counteract the growth of moss, thatch is edged with copper. By cleverly disengaging base an roof, the architect has been able to make a huge house that does not look out of place amongst its neighbours.
