Look and feel A1GP
A1 Team Netherlands organized a design competition for the new look and feel for the dutch A1GP car. The jury, chaired by Jan Lammers, chose npk’s design out of 1000 entries.
The starting point of the design was to emphasize the high tech character of the car. To underline this, the car was printed with a 3D computer grid. The grid was calculated by a CAD system and varies in density, depending on the curvature of the body and the wings. Every facet of the resulting pattern was given a colour, in all 60 tones. The overall image of the car was the dominant factor for the choice of the colours: watching the race from the stand, the car shows the dutch flag. The front of the car is predominantly orange so that the dutch team is clearly recognizable for the camera. On some parts of the car, for example on the wing at the back, the tone and tone intensity depend on the aerodynamics of the car. Because with racing cars every gram counts, the design was carried out using thin plastic film.
