IJ-Tram
The IJ-tram links Amsterdam Central Station with the residential area 'IJburg'. The Amsterdam Quality Assurance Committee selected npk to take care of the identity and design of this 15 kilometre tramline. The assignment contained all vertical elements: shelters, the masts for the overhead wires, the lighting, and the corresponding graphic design. The final design has an entirely distinct character. Solutions have been found to problems encountered by the blind or partially sighted who wish to make use of the tram. The overhead cable masts are also lighting masts, so that the tram is also floodlit. The Amsterdam Municipal council was so pleased with the design that it awarded npk the contract of designing a new street lighting system in the same style. This has now become the standard new lighting system for through roads in all of Amsterdam.
